The Rubin Model
A Novel Simulation System to Teach Intrauterine, Intrafetal, & Intracardiac Injection
Developed through a U.S.–New Zealand collaboration, the Rubin Model brings accessible, hands-on procedural training to clinical learners around the world.
About The Rubin Model
The ability to induce fetal demise is an advanced obstetrical skill that permits expansion of abortion care to later gestations without risking an unintended live birth, but it is a skill that is not routinely taught in residency and abortion training programs.
The Rubin Model is a high-fidelity simulation system to teach ultrasound-guided intra-amniotic, intrafetal, and intracardiac injections in a low-risk simulated setting before incorporating this skill into clinical practice. It can also be used to teach amniocentesis, amnio-infusion, and other intrauterine procedures.”

Workshops & Trainings
Dr. Rubin offers virtual and in-person workshops and lectures tailored to your institution’s needs, including:
Hands-on Simulation Workshop with the Rubin Model, including an evidence-based didactic lecture on reasons to induce fetal demise, common agents used, and the tools and technique for intracardiac injection.
Grand Rounds, resident lectures, and didactics on a variety of topics including the importance of access to later abortion care, later abortion tools and techniques, the current abortion landscape since the fall of Roe v Wade, physicians as advocates for reproductive health, novel contraceptives, and multiple other topics.
Customized half- and full-day programs individualized to your institution’s needs, aimed at shifting institutional culture and increasing access to abortion care. Didactic lectures, values clarification workshops for stakeholders (physicians, L&D nurses, anesthesia colleagues), and hands-on trainings with the Rubin Model are a few of the possible components.

What Educators and Clinicians Are Saying
Clinicians around the world are using The Rubin Model to build confidence, improve procedural accuracy, and make complex obstetrical procedures more accessible.
-
The Rubin Model can be used to teach induction of fetal demise via intra-amniotic, intrafetal, and intracardiac injection. Other intrauterine procedures like amniocentesis and amnioinfusion can also be practiced in a low-risk learning environment before performing procedures on patients.
-
The Rubin Model can be used to teach Ob/Gyn or Family Medicine residents, Maternal Fetal Medicine and Complex Family Planning fellows, advanced practice clinicians, and other physicians interested in learning to perform intrauterine procedures. Solid pre-existing skills in obstetric ultrasound are beneficial.
-
The Rubin Model kit contains everything you need to build 5 balloon simulation systems and begin teaching ultrasound-guided injections. The kit includes a Rubin Model base, 5 fishing sinkers (fetal heart targets), 5 fetal heart balloons, 5 fetus balloons, 5 amniotic sac balloons, gelatin to create the fetus balloons, red food coloring to fill the fetal heart balloons, silicone adhesive sealant to coat the balloons to permit repeated puncture, and a 60cc syringe to fill the balloons. Please note that pork belly (simulated maternal tissue) is NOT included in the Rubin Model kit and must be acquired separately.
-
The Rubin Model base is reusable, and is dishwasher safe for easy cleaning. It can be disassembled for storage if desired. The balloon simulation systems are generally used for a single session, but can be created in advance and frozen indefinitely for future use.
-
Yes! Dr. Rubin is available to lead in-person or virtual workshops using the Rubin Model. Workshops generally run about 2 hours in duration. The didactic portion includes a review of the current literature on the indications for inducing fetal demise, common agents used to induce fetal asystole, intracardiac injection tools and techniques, and an introduction to the Rubin Model simulation system. The hands-on portion involves time with the Rubin Model to practice ultrasound-guided injections.
